Insomnia vs. poor sleep quality
People with a condition called DSPS are often mis-diagnosed as having insomnia.
Poor sleep quality is a condition that
can occur as a result of sleep apnea or major depression.
Poor sleep quality is different from
insomnia. If you have insomnia, your biggest problem is falling asleep. If you have poor sleep quality, the problem is that you fall asleep
but never reach Stage 4 or delta sleep which is the type of sleelp that has restorative properties.
Poor sleep quality and sleep apnea
If you have poor sleep quality due to
sleep apnea, this is a conditon that occurs when your breathing is interrupted which, in turn, interrupts your normal sleep cycle. If you have the obstructive form of the condition,
some part of your respiratory tract loses muscle tone and partially collapses. People with obstructive sleep apnea often do not remember
awakening during the night or having trouble breathing. But they will complain about excessive sleepiness during the
day.
The other form of sleep apnea, central
sleep apnea interrupts the normal breathing stimulus of your central nervous system, and you must actually wake
up in order to start breathing again. This form of apnea is often related to congestive heart failute, premature aging or a cerebral
vascular condition.
Poor sleep quality and major depression
Major depression leads to changes in the function of the hypothalamus and pituitary which cause excessive release of cortisol
which can lead to poor sleep quality.
Treatment for poor sleep quality associated with depression
If you are suffering from poor sleep quality due to major depression, your doctor may prescribean anti-depression
drug such as Lexapro, Effexor, Cymbalta, Zoloft, Paxil, Prozac, or Wellbutrin.
Poor sleep quality and sleep apnea
If your doctor believes you sleep problem is due to sleep apnea, the first thing he or she will probably prescribe is a sleep test
called a polysonogram. This test is usually conducted in a hospital and requires that you spend a night hooked up to various
monitors.
If it is determined that you do have sleep apnea, there are three
different ways to treat the problem - surgical, with natural supplements and using non-invasive intervention such as a CPAP
